Proudly Representing Veterans in Need
Veterans Criminal Defense Lawyer in Georgetown, TX
Todd Ver Weire
Veteran. A word that carries different meanings for so many. Personally, a Veteran is someone who deserves compassion and help for their service. Whether you served a combat tour, or spent time stateside, the rigors of service above self can cause serious physical injuries and long-term repercussions on your mental health. If you have a run-in with local law enforcement, you need to be wary. Police officers often don’t have the training to deal with veterans’ mental health crises or struggles with addiction and substance abuse.
You deserve an opportunity to work with someone who understands these issues so that you have a chance at rehabilitation, not being branded a criminal. That’s where the Law Office of W. Todd Ver Weire can help. In his decades of practice, Todd has worked with numerous vets in need. He can provide a strong legal defense and help you avoid criminal penalties through pre-trial diversionary programs.
We want to honor and recognize your service to this country. To set up a consultation with an experienced criminal defense attorney committed to Georgetown’s veterans, contact our law firm today. You can also reach our Williamson County law office by phone at (512) 368-7202.
We Understand the Challenges Local Veterans Face

While studying at West Point, Todd Ver Weire always considered the who, what, when, where, why, and how of every situation. This helped him when he worked as a prosecutor and City Attorney in Arkansas, and it’s just as crucial when he’s defending veterans here in Central Texas.
Todd will take time to listen to you and understand your struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, anxiety, and other challenges following your time in the military.
We will consider all options available to get your charges dropped or reduced.
Defense Counsel for Williamson County Veterans Treatment Court
In addition to his work as a criminal justice lawyer, Todd Ver Weire is program defense counsel for the Williamson County Veterans Treatment Court (WCVTC).
WCVTC is a pre-trial intervention program that focuses on treating a veteran’s underlying mental health or addiction issues instead of punishing someone accused of a crime that lasts a minimum of 12 months.
If you qualify for Williamson County Veterans Treatment Court, you have the potential to:
- Get your case dismissed, and the state of Texas has to pay for the expunction
- Plead to a lesser charge when you either begin the program or upon completion of the program
Either of these WCVTC options is better for you and your future.
Who Is Eligible for Williamson County Veterans Treatment Court?
To qualify for WCVTC, you need to live in Williamson County or a surrounding county. Certain types of offenses or any pending criminal cases may prevent you from participating in Veterans Treatment Court.
Todd and his team try to get as many eligible vets as possible down the diversion track through WCVTC. People in high need of mental health services or drug counseling usually have a good chance of being accepted into the program. However, the Judge overseeing the program and the treatment team ultimately makes that call.
We can discuss your eligibility for WCVTC as well as alternatives during the consultation process.
Help for Georgetown’s Vets Beyond Criminal Defense Representation
Veterans sacrifice so much, and our team wants to honor your service. In addition to being a good defense lawyer for Georgetown’s vets, Todd just wants to be a decent human being.
If you’re a veteran accused of a crime and you need help, Todd can reach out to someone here in the community and see what they can do about providing assistance.
Connecting Vets with Medical Care and Disability Benefits
Many veterans are eligible for medical or disability benefits, yet they don’t realize it. Even if it’s just an initial screening, Todd and his team can make sure you know about essential services available through Veterans Affairs.
- Benefits Through the VA: Our team can coordinate with the VJO (Veterans Justice Outreach) through Veterans Treatment Court to get you medical benefits. We can also work with the VSO (Veterans Service Officer) through Williamson County to get you a disability rating.
- Care and Services Outside of the VA: If you would prefer benefits and services outside of the VA, Todd can help there as well. He can make sure you get the proper releases so you can see a doctor or surgeon here in Georgetown or the local area. We know medical professionals all over Williamson County who are ready to help veterans like you.
Connecting Vets with Job Assistance and Other Resources
In addition to medical care and other benefits through the VA, Todd can look in his Rolodex and see if he can connect you with someone who can help out. (He can even explain what a Rolodex is if you’re too young to know.)
Over the years, Todd’s helped veterans find jobs and opened doors for other kinds of opportunities. Again, this isn’t just about being a good lawyer. It’s about recognizing the sacrifices you’ve made for this country and honoring your service.
Types of Criminal Defense Cases We Handle
Attorney Todd Ver Weire can defend Williamson County veterans charged with any misdemeanor or felony. This includes:
- Assault Charges: Many assault and battery charges involving vets are associated with PTSD and mental health. Law enforcement isn’t trained to consider what you’ve been through or are going through, but Todd will listen and make sure you get to tell your side of the story.
- Domestic Violence Allegations: As with assault charges, many veterans face domestic violence and spousal abuse charges that are linked to mental health. Even when spouses tell officers that their partner is having a crisis, that falls on deaf ears. Todd and his team will listen and make sure you are heard.
- Driving While Intoxicated (DWI): There’s a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) training center in nearby Florence. That leads to a lot of vets getting pulled over for drunk driving or drug use on Highway 195 or Interstate 35. Todd can help you get those charges dropped or reduced.
- Drug and Narcotics Charges: Veterans may face serious penalties for drug possession, distribution, and trafficking. There may be a complicated personal story behind your use of controlled substances, and Todd can help make sure you’re properly represented.
- Marijuana-Related Offenses: While cannabis is legal in nearby states, marijuana is still illegal for recreational use in Texas. If you’re a local veteran charged with possession, distribution, or simply having paraphernalia, Todd can help to get your charges dropped or reduced.
- Theft Charges: Theft covers a wide range of property crimes that carry serious penalties. Whether it’s shoplifting or identity theft, Todd is prepared to provide a strong defense that considers your situation as a vet and what you’ve been through.
